Alvar Aalto has been a long time favorite architect and furniture designer of mine. In this book simply titled, Aalto, we get a brief history of his life, studies and highlights of his career. Aalto often did not stop his design process as designing the building, he would go as far as designing door handles and furniture for the space. I find his approach to architecture romantic in a way, criticizing functionalism he states: “Architecture does not just encompass all of the spheres of human life, it must also be developed further in all of these spheres at the same time. Should this not happen, we will only get one-sided and superficial results.” I find his sentiment amusing because I find his furniture highly functional, but also beautifully classic. Here I have shared a few of my favorite Aalto spaces and buildings, but to see more, be sure to pick up a copy of Aalto.
