I’m trying to find more time to occupy this space. Today, I’m here to talk about vegan brie. My love of brie started as a child, when I lived in France for a bit. Afterwards, my favorite meal was something my mom and I called the “one-of-a-kind” dinner. Essentially, it was like a charcuterie board. Fresh fruit, and veggies centered around melted brie and a beautiful baguette. Since becoming vegan over six years ago, my search for vegan brie has been endless. So here is my vegan brie review…

I have to say the best brie I’ve had is from Delice & Sarrasin, a vegan French restaurant in the West Village. Unfortunately, they don’t allow the brie to be taken out, as it doesn’t reheat well. While this is a great option when dining out, I want this same experience at home.

Last weekend, I stopped by the Essex Market and visited Riverdel, the best vegan cheese shop in the city. They offer five different brie options, so I decided to try their top three favorite bries.

While I didn’t find that any of these brie options melted like their dairy counterparts, the flavors did not disappoint.

Brie- From Rebel Cheese, this is my least favorite brie of the three. It tastes very similar to a simple cashew brie I make at home, with the familiar tang from lemon juice.

Simply White- Made in Spain and using traditional cheese making techniques, I found this brie to taste the closest to the real thing. The flavor was mild, creamy and even the outer rind reminded me of the original dairy based brie.

Maverick- Made from cashews and aged to develop the skin, this was the stinkiest of the three options. While I liked it the most, it didn’t remind me of brie as much as a mild blue cheese. I would get it again, but not when I’m craving the simple flavor of brie.
