This year has been full of firsts, some good, some bad and some in-between. With the country breathing a sigh of relief this week, I find solace in this land-art piece by Noguchi entitled, Memorial to Man or Sculpture to be Seen from Mars. Although never fully actualized, the idea of this piece, made from the earth, was intended to only be visible from outer space. A memorial to our species in case we obliterated ourselves and a signal to outer space that there was once civilization on Earth. Noguchi conceptualized this memorial as a response to the growing hopelessness he felt following the Cold War. Earlier this year, I could say that his sentiment was parallel with how many of us felt when the Coronavirus changed everything.
