Chairs are a “language of necessity” and have been for hundreds of years. They often signify the fashions of the time, not only in design and material but in function as well. Vitra is currently streaming Chair Times: A History of Seating From 1800 to Today. An informative retrospective of all the great chairs designed in the past 220 years.

Told Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra explains in the film, “The biggest strides are probably accomplished when society undergoes significant change. Innovation doesn’t happen in periods of slow progress, but during times of crisis or times marked by change.”
