DIY: Embellished Sweater

Embellished sweaters and graphic sweatshirts are trending right now, and for good reason. Who wouldn’t want to amp up their favorite basic? Well this morning I did just that. I took an old Angora sweater dress that was rarely in my wardrobe rotation, and turned it into a must-wear now piece. The key to making this DIY work for you is choosing a simple sweater silhouette that has a heavy yarn in a solid color. Stay away from lightweight sweaters, you don’t want them to stretch out where you sew on your embellishment.

Choose stones, sequins, or buttons in the same color family in different shapes, materials and size. I went with neutral earth tones. Be sure to choose a needle that fits through all the holes in your chosen embellishment.

Play with your stones to create similar size and shaped clusters, with stones in different colors, shapes and materials. Then cut out post-its that are the average size of your clusters and lay them out on your sweater. When you are happy with your layout, pin the post-its to your sweater and try it on in front of the mirror. Be sure to move any post-its that are too off to the side or land in places like the center of your boob. Take off  your sweater and lay out your clusters next to the sweater in roughly the same layout as your post–its, making sure the layout has balance. Then one by one, sew on each cluster in place of a post-it.

And finally, WEAR IT!
